Promoting Church Music To Glorify God and Edify Man
The mission of HOS is to promote and raise the standard of church music in the Asian region. Through its concerts, music training, recordings and publications, HOS cultivates and trains talents in church music as well as encourage and challenge Christians to serve in the Church Music Ministry, with the aim of raising the standard and quality of church music amongst the churches.
Hallelujah Oratorio Society
The origins of Hallelujah Oratorio Society (HOS) can be traced back to 1977, when choir members from the “Successor Evangelism” formed the Successor Choral Society under the auspices of the Singapore Chinese Christian Union. In 1987, it was renamed “Hallelujah Oratorio Society” (HOS).
Under the direction of Rev Lee Chong Min, former music lecturer at the School of Church Music, Singapore Bible College (SBC) and currently the artistic director of the International Christian Choral Conductor Society (ICCCS) and various Christian choral groups in Asia, HOS has since grown into one of Singapore’s most widely acclaimed Christian choral societies. Its repertoire ranges from oratorios, masses, choral symphonies to contemporary choral anthems. Amongst HOS are also a small group of choristers known as the Hallelujah Singers which regularly performs at Church Music Sunday worship services and other special events and concerts.
Since 2003, HOS, together with the Singapore Bible College Chorale, has been involved in regular partnership with the Singapore Symphony Chorus and has performed in many Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s concerts under the baton of Maestro Lim Yau, Maestro Okko Kamu and Maestro Lan Shui. HOS has also collaborated with The Philharmonic Orchestra (founded by Lim Yau) in various concerts.
Besides performing, HOS also organizes music-related workshops, seminars, vocal masterclass, choir festivals and overseas music tours. In recent years, HOS, in collaboration with ICCCS, had organized several Choral Music Camps and Choral Conducting workshops in effort to raise the bar in choral singing and choral conducting technique among church choirs. HOS also offers group lessons in vocal technique and music reading, equipping music leaders for effective service in their respective music ministries.
HOS offers the “Friends of Hallelujah” and “HOS Alumni” membership scheme, produces choral music albums and publishes a quarterly magazine “Music and Friends”, as a form of education outreach and communication with the church community.
Lee Chong Min has been the music director and conductor of the Singapore Hallelujah Oratorio Society since the society’s inception. He is the founder and artistic director of the International Christian Choral Conductor Society, the music director of the International Christian Festival Singers, Johor Chorale Music Society and the artistic director of Bintulu Chinese Christian Music Association and the Kenaniah Chorale Association (Sibu).
